6. One Thing Worth Knowing
The Time Limerick Printed Its Own Money As we head into April, we are approaching the anniversary of one of the most rebellious and fascinating two weeks in the city's history: The Limerick Soviet.

Limerick Printed Its Own Money
From April 15th to 27th, 1919, in protest against the British Army declaring the city a "Special Military Area," the local Trades and Labour Council essentially took over the city. For 12 days, this strike committee ran Limerick entirely on their own terms. They controlled food prices, published their own newspapers, and amazingly, even printed their own local currency! It’s a brilliant piece of Treaty City history to brush up on as the anniversary approaches. Read the full story of the Limerick Soviet here
